(Sounds of a schoolyard: bell ringing, laughter, ping-pong ball bouncing)

In our yard where the swings always creak,
Friendship's so strong — it's unique.
Ray is the bully, Valera's the poet,
A bond between them, they both know it:
"Sky, earth, and honor! Hook!"
But everything changed on that fateful day,
When a new girl moved in just down the way.
Katya lived right behind the next wall,
Polite and sweet, she charmed one and all.
Ray pulled her braid for no reason at all...
At home, there was thunder for each boy's fall.
Valera wanted to write an apology verse,
But ended up blaming his friend, which was worse.
And friendship collapsed under quarrels and spite,
As love won the battle that lasted all night.

The janitress washed them away with cold water,
While Katya laughed loud like silver-clad slaughter.

They sold off some tickets; peace now provided.
They went to the park, dressed up very fine,
Bought candy (a ruble-fifty combined).
They shared every piece with her hand-in-hand,
Each trying hard to be top of the band.
She likes them both—what a terrible plight!
Ray should be smart, Valera takes flight...
To dream as a poet until the sunrise...
How can you choose? Just look in her eyes!

'Til Katya's strict father heard about glee.

Her father got angry, he had to find out
What kind of income these rascals were about?
He marched to Valera's dad to discuss
Just how those young hooligans make their big bucks.
Then momma came running—"Our cash disappeared!"
She thought that the boys must have taken it here.
So Valera's old man grabbed his belt from the hook,
And whipped them both good, like a villain from a book.
Ray could have run, but he stood by his mate,
Not leaving his friend to this horrible fate.
The money was found... 'neath the newspaper stack!
But damage was done, there's no turning back.

Finale
The friends looked at each other deep in the gloom,
"Because of this love we almost met doom."
They gathered the strength that remained in their souls,
And made themselves swear on two brand-new roles:
"Sky, earth. Steel and honor! We said the oath. Hook!"
